How Do I Know What Size Hockey Jersey To Buy

Whatever NHL team you root for, we think you'll agree that an official NHL jersey is something you just have to own. While hockey jerseys typically can't be worn year-round - they are sweaters, after all, with thicker materials than jerseys in other sports - a jersey is perfect for the colder months of the NHL season. Our hockey jersey buying guide has everything to assist with getting the best Blackhawks jersey for you.

First, we need to talk about what NHL jersey styles are available - because there are several options. Over the years, the NHL has granted NHL jersey rights to different companies. There was a major change in 2017 with Adidas replacing Reebok as the official supplier of Replica, Premier and Authentic jerseys. Both Fanatics and CCM also have limited NHL jersey rights. Read more about each hockey jersey style below:

A replica hockey team jersey is designed to look and feel like an authentic jersey at a lower price point. Also known as NHL practice jerseys, these sweaters are made of 100% polyester fabric with a looser fit. The numbers, logos and names are ironed onto the jersey and there are no shoulder patches. Officially-licensed replica NHL jerseys currently cost around $135. (Older official jerseys made by Reebok cost significantly less.)

Take the next step up in quality with a Blackhawks Premier hockey jersey. They are made of a special two-mesh stretch polyester material. While the fabrics are somewhat lower quality than the Authentic jersey, they have the same athletic fit. The team logo is embroidered while the numbers and player names are screen-printed. You'll also find the NHL center ice woven neck label and other official patches and tags. Premier jerseys typically start around $190.

These jerseys are as good as it gets. An authentic NHL hockey jersey is the same one worn by your favorite Blackhawks players. They're made of premium performance materials with "adizero" technology and Clima fabric that improves their breathability. The name, number and logos are all embroidered and they have all the official tags and labels. Prices start around $225.

You won't be able to fully enjoy the gameday experience if your NHL sweater is too loose or too tight. Below, you'll find both the Adidas hockey jersey sizing chart and the Fanatics NHL jersey size chart. These charts, which are based on information from the official NHL shop, will help you find the right fit. All measurements are in inches.

How to wear a hockey jersey depends on several factors. For the Adidas jerseys, the NHL recommends ordering one size smaller than what you normally wear for everyday use. Conversely, if you will be wearing equipment or multiple clothing layers beneath your jersey, order a size larger than normal. If your measurements fall in the middle of two sizes, get the smaller size for a tighter fit and the larger size for a looser fit.

Clark Street Sports firmly believes in standing behind our hockey jerseys with confidence. It breaks our hearts to see so many fake NHL jerseys lining the racks of deceitful sporting goods shops. Luckily, there are some ways to spot knock-off hockey jerseys:

Next, measure from the top of your shoulder pad to the hip. This number is your length, typically the B measurement on a size chart. Players tend to know whether they prefer a longer jersey, but this B measurement is also an important one for fans to consider: Do you want your jersey to hang below your waist? How far? For example, some women like to wear a hockey jersey like a short dress and thus will want a long "B" measurement, though a similarly ultra-long jersey might look silly on someone else.

Finally, obtain your hockey jersey sleeve length. With arms extended to the sides, measure from the center of the back of your neck to the wrist. This number is the C measurement on most sizing charts. If you're buying your own jersey for team play, make sure you know whether your team uses a or full-length sleeve.

Creating a custom hockey jersey is easy, whether you want just one for a special event or you need to outfit an entire team. Pure Hockey offers several jersey customization options at different price points for adding logos, names, numbers, or other graphics.

  • If you plan to wear shirts or other layers under your NHL jersey, you may want to order the next size up to ensure a comfortable fit.

  • If your measurement is between two sizes you can either order the smaller size for a tighter fit or the next size up for a looser fit.

The adidas Authentic jerseys have a loose, baggy fit. If you prefer a tighter fit, you will need to size down at least one size. This is how NHLShop.com describes the fit of the Adidas Authentic jerseys:

As you can see, the size 50 is much larger and longer than a medium Hanes t-shirt. This, of course, is not shocking since NHL jerseys are made large so that they can be layered underneath.

Again, it is best to think of your jersey much like you would a pullover jacket. The normal sizing is going to allow room for your clothes underneath. If you would prefer a slimmer fit, size down at least one size.

The Adidas Practice jerseys have a baggy, loose fit just like the other NHL fan jerseys. There is room to layer underneath. If you want a slimmer fit, you will need to size down at least one size.

I ordered a size 50 since it is supposed to be a medium equivalent. As I said earlier, I wear a medium in most shirts and so I went ahead and ordered the 50 knowing it would be baggy, but planning to layer underneath.

The Fanatics Breakaway NHL jerseys use a standard small-medium-large sizing system, which is different than the numerical sizing system that the Adidas NHL jerseys use. I ordered a size medium. This is my size medium Fanatics Breakaway jersey compared to a size medium Hanes undershirt straight out of the package:

Figuring out what size hockey jersey can be difficult. We recommend having your player put on their undergarments they normally wear and shoulder pads before measuring. If your player is in between sizes, then order the larger size.

Learn about the appropriate sizes for hockey jersey letters and numbers, including the Captain's C and Alternate's A. Design great-looking jerseys by following the recommended heat transfer materials and application methods.

TL;DR the size typically indicates the length around the chest. Therefore a size 46 will typically be 23" pit to pit, a size 50 will be 25" pit to pit, and so on. See the tables below that assign a lettered size to each numbered size, and note that hockey jerseys fit loose, so most people go down one size. For example, I wear a size large t-shirt, but prefer a size medium hockey jersey. Sizes that end in "G" (e.g. "58-G") are goalie cut, and will have much wider sleeves and torso.

Nike's corresponding letter sizes can vary from model to model. For example, NHL size 48 jerseys are labeled "medium", but Olympic 48s can be labeled "large". That said, Nike made some of the looser fitting jerseys compared to other manufacturers, so keep that in mind in choose which size is right for you.

Retail authentic Adidas jerseys (also known as "Indo-Adidas" jerseys) are made in Indonesia, and are a lower quality than the Made in Canada (MiC) Adidas jerseys. The retail authentic Adidas jerseys have a fight strap, as well as stitched crests, shoulder patches, and customization. However, factory customization is often stitched single layered vinyl, instead of the typical stacked or kiss cut twill that is on the on-ice versions. Be sure to check each jersey's description and photos to know what kind of customization it has. The jersey material itself is more stretchy than an MiC Authentic jersey. See the photos above in the "Authentic Adidas MiC" section to compare the Retail Authentic fight straps and shoulder dimples to their MiC counterparts. Retail authentic jerseys are called either "Climalite" or "Aeroready", which is labeled on the inside collar below the size tag as shown in the photos below. There are no differences between Climalie and Aeroready, other than Climalite being made from 2017-2019, and Aeroready being made from 2019-Present.

Another quirk related to the 2017-18 retail authentic Adidas jerseys was that the crests and shoulder patches were smaller on any jerseys smaller than a size 50. Below you can see this difference between a size 46 (left) and a size 50 (right). Crests and shoulder patches are normal sized for all jerseys made after the 2017-2018 season (jerseys without the Adidas button).

Additionally, the NHL shield on the collar insert changed slightly due to some players complaining the points on the top of the shield was digging into their necks. Below you see the hard NHL shield (left) vs. a softer, thinner shield (right) that came as a response to player complaints. Additionally, the team issued Reebok Edge jerseys had only a size tag inside the neck, whereas the retail Reebok Edge jerseys had a retail neck tag (the black and gray Reebok tag shown below) in addition to the size tag.

After Starter lost their license to produce NHL hockey jerseys in 1999, Pro Player (which was a subsidiary of Fruit of the Loom) stepped in to manufacture jerseys for teams including the Bruins, Coyotes, Mighty Ducks, Blackhawks, and Oilers. The Pro player jerseys I have seen have all been air-knit, and are very high quality jerseys. Since Pro Player jerseys lasted for just one season, they are often more difficult to find. Most if not all Pro Player jerseys were made in Canada.

Nike manufactured jerseys for select NHL teams beginning in 1996 including the Blackhawks, Flyers, Maple Leafs, and Mighty Ducks. Bauer (who is a subsidiary of Nike) manufactured the Nashville Predators jerseys in their inaugural season of 1998-99. They are the only NHL team to wear Bauer jerseys, and they would switch to CCM in their second season. Rumor has it that Nike didn't want their logo on an expansion team's jersey, so given they they already manufactured minor league hockey jerseys, they took the tagging from those, and slapped it on the Preds' jerseys. 041b061a72
