What is Operations Research?
Operations research (OR) is a branch of applied mathematics that deals with the analysis and optimization of complex systems and processes. It uses mathematical models, algorithms, and techniques to help decision-makers solve problems involving planning, scheduling, resource allocation, logistics, transportation, inventory management, production control, quality assurance, and more.
Definition and Scope
According to the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), OR is "the science of making better decisions in complex situations". OR aims to find the best possible solutions to problems that involve multiple objectives, constraints, uncertainties, and trade-offs. OR can be applied to any field or industry that requires systematic and rational decision-making, such as engineering, business, management, economics, health care, education, military, government, etc.
Applications and Benefits
OR has many real-world applications that can improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and profitability of various systems and processes. Some examples of OR applications are:
Optimizing the routes and schedules of airlines, trains, buses, trucks, etc.
Designing the layout and operation of factories, warehouses, distribution centers, etc.
Allocating the resources and personnel of hospitals, clinics, emergency services, etc.
Planning the projects and activities of organizations, teams, individuals, etc.
Evaluating the performance and quality of products, services, processes, etc.
Forecasting the demand and supply of goods, services, resources, etc.
Simulating the behavior and outcomes of complex systems under different scenarios.
The benefits of OR are manifold. OR can help decision-makers:
Reduce costs and waste
Increase productivity and efficiency
Maximize profits and revenues
Minimize risks and losses
Enhance customer satisfaction and loyalty
Improve quality and reliability
Support innovation and creativity
